The War of 1812 was a conflict fought between the United States, the United Kingdom, and their respective allies from 18 June 1812 to 16 February 1815. Historians in Britain often see it as a minor theatre of the Napoleonic Wars, while historians in the United States and Canada see it as a war in its own right.

History[]

The War[]

The war started in 1812 after the United States declared war on Great Britain following disputes of American territorial expansion, prompting the U.S. to initiate a series of attacks on Canada, then a British colony. In 1814, British forces invaded Washington, D.C. and burned down several government buildings, including the White House. However, with victories and losses for both the British and Americans, the war ended in a stalemate in 1815.

Legacy[]

The War of 1812 was a pivotal event in American history as it was marked as one of the only times the United States was invaded by a foreign power and the White House was captured. However in 2013, the White House Siege occurred, orchestrated by the Koreans for United Freedom, a North Korean paramilitary terrorist organization. This event marks the second time the White House was captured by a foreign power in American history.
