The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a conflict in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos from November 1, 1955 to the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some, the war lasted nineteen years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973.
It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies; South Vietnam was supported by the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand and other anti-communist allies.

During the Vietnam War, Clay Banning was a decorated Army Ranger who served as a tunnel rat. However, after U.S involvement in the war ended, he suffered from PTSD and abandoned his family, living as a survivalist in wooded areas of Alaska, North Carolina, and West Virginia.
In 1975, the war ended after Vietnam was reunified under a communist regime following the capture of Saigon by North Vietnamese forces.
