With the surrounding Incheon metropolis and Gyeonggi province, Seoul forms the heart of the Seoul Capital Area. Ranked as an alpha world city, Seoul was the world's 4th largest metropolitan economy.

In 2004, the British Embassy of Seoul was bombed by the Koreans for United Freedom. In 2007, there was a hostage crisis in Seoul, masterminded by Kang Yeonsak.
